truly a lost art
Awesome 😎 thank you 😊
I purchased a SM kit years ago. The tuner holes were not aligned or spaced correctly. Plugged and redrilled to make the neck useable. Turned out rather nice. I’d do it again.
Sheesh never seen anyone beat a mandrel out of babbit the mandrel will strink when cool
this is like a time machine. being from victor and born in 1993, its amazing to see this as an adult. all of it, the mesmerizing funscape, to just how the world looked during those times. would love to see more videos from the area if you have them/have a chance to upload!
See this mandolin completed here: ua-cam.com/video/xwqAp5MeaC8/v-deo.html
just nailed it i am searching for reading a newspaper effectively and fast but after this i think i should stop thanks for the video
LOL
I recognize that version of "Carrot Stew."
i wish Gibson haven't stop making this type of guitar
hey bud nice set up where can i buy the same pick up set you have thanx
She’s a beaut!
I have always wondered how this turned out! Thanks for posting! It looks great! :D
e-newspapers way better lol. put this sht in your bird cage
I would ditch the plastic binding and come up with a wood or combo of wood /abalone... very nice kit worthy of something better than PVC binding, in my opinion... maybe some maple/abalone/ebony ? Or something original. Thanks for sharing.. I wondered what that kit looked like... beautiful maple..
Is there a way to contact you? I have a question for you.
You can email me at frankcost100@gmail.com
I used to get controlled by my newspapers but now I know to get physical with them and show them who's boss. Thank yoy
Haha. Very good!
That's a great story about his biplane and how he acquired it. I would have been too afraid to try flying it without ailerons. That would have been a great loss if it would have pitched to the left or right and crashed.
Fun scape was near the regal Cinemas near Eastview Mall
get a room
Hello, if I want to replace the tuners with chet atkins ce, will the usual ones be suitable for a classical guitar?
I think the tuners on the guitar are Schallers with standard dimensions.
That Sears looked old it is a vintage Sears department store. now we have no more sears locations one closed in the mall of Greece Ridge. In 2018 and still vacant. And the one in Eastview Mall closed in 2018 the one in marketplace mall closed in 2019. Those locations had auto centers except for the white location who didn’t had one. It closed in 2016.
I know the fun scape used to be near Eastview mall my favorite mall in the 1990s it looked old and vintage that mall first opened up in 1971 and there was a Sears now it’s a dick’s house of sport
Next to that the regal Cinemas Opened on March 1, 1996. Regal Cinemas was next-door to fun scape.
They opened together
Great video truly helpful
Thanks for the video. Were you able to get StewMac to do anything for you for the dent in the neck? Looking forward to watching the series 🙂
How's this project going Frank? I am excited to see how it's turning out! :)
Are you selling it
Best advice I could give this fella is to do some research on graduating mandolin plates. It's amost funny how he's persuaded that all he has to do is sand it smooth.
I can't tell if this is a joke or if it's real?
Awesome.
Everything looks soo clean, when doing a plate changes I could get ink up to my arm pits . Alot of jobs have been lost in printing in the last 20 years which is a real shame as they were very well-paying jobs.
Good
I’m almost 30 never read the paper before besides the funnies as a kid and watched my dad read it all the time on the weekends. Finally bought one and didn’t know how to read it. Honestly this helped lol. You really do have to manhandle it lol
Waoo well done job
Hello are u interested in selling the guitar
I watch this video about once a year, one because I loved funscape when I was a kid, and two now that I'm a dad I remind myself of the patience as parents we must exhibit. I still crack up every time you say, "We don't have enough...fun...at home"
Thanks, my paper always told me how to read it but then I started punching it and giving it some air and now it got quiet and let me read how I want it
If you can’t use scrapers ,you are adding to the work load . You probably should not be trying to make a mandolin .
I'm not trying to be a shmuck Frank .. but I always tell anyone whose doing luthier work to only use TiteBond Original .. Because it requires a lot less heat to release than Titebond 2 or 3 .. You should be okay on this because usually you never have to take a mandolin neck off to do a reset.. I have found that I use different glues for different things nowadays.. Titebond original mostly but on the back, fingerboard I'll use hide glue ... if I am using wood binding I'll use fish glue because it will take the least amount of heat to remove. However that doesn't work well with plastics.. it will ,but if you live in a dry section of the country it will come loose as the wood shrinks from lack of moisture.. Botton line is that a person should always think about what will happen if you need to repair it later .. Like if the any braces come loose so bad you have to remove the back , how easily will that back and binding come off in order to properly repair it, without doing a bunch damage to the wood with minimal tearout.. Just an insight.... But on an instrument, Original Titebond is more than enough to hold... That's why most manufacturers and luthiers use it. I'm sure you know to only use a water based glue no matter what except for certain repairs and inlay where CA glue prettymuch has to be used .. Your mandolin is looking good .. I was wondering what the wood was like in those kits .... been thinking about buying one and carving my own top because I already have some quartersawn Adirondack spruce for the top , which is what Loyd Loar mandolins are made of .. I think you convinced me that the flames maple is nice .. I'm going to buy the kit .
I hate to watch luthiers grab Titebond 2 or Titebond 3 ... It makes future future repairs very hard ...because they now have to have twice as much heat to take it apart... Original Titebond is the key ...it will hold every joint just fine .... Hope that neck never needs repaired or replaced .. I know neck repairs are rare .. I remember a guy that wanted a wider custom neck ... I just think about the long time that steam would have have to go to break that loose .. and the higher heat ... not fun . Luckily it was glued with hIde glue ..( which I consider the worst holding glue )
I remember when FunScape was there, it closed in the early 2000s when Regal Cinemas was in financial trouble. Personally, Regal should’ve sold FunScape to someone else who could’ve kept it afloat. It probably would still be around to this day had that happened.
Hello, I would like to know where to buy this pickup and the wooden accessory, thank you
Hey Frank, I think you’re right these stewmac kits are really good , I do have some measurements for a 23 or 24 lower top with those measurements like you’re speaking of earlier if you’d give me your email I can actually send them to you if you would like but I did not see anywhere on your page where you havefinished or learning to play it or anything I was just curious
What does the kit cost and where do you get them?

Cool, thanks for sharing. I’d like to get one of these kits one day.
